Gay-Friendly Colleges

Gay, lesbian and bi-sexual students often face special concerns when hunting for a college where they will feel welcome and accepted. What should gay students look for in a gay-friendly college? Kathy Belge has written a good overview of questions gay and lesbian students need to ask as they visit and compare colleges. She suggests that they consult The College/University Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual/Trans Centers and Programs Directory maintained by The National Consortium of Directors of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Resources in Higher Education.

A newer and, perhaps more useful, resource is the just-published The Advocate College Guide for LGBT Students, a guidebook published by The Advocate, a national newsmagazine for gays and lesbians. The 389-page guidebook lists 100 colleges and universities that offer the highest "gay point average" - the most friendly climate, the best protection against discrimination, and the most extensive campus services for gay students. According to the Guide, the Top 20 Campuses for LGBT students are (in alphabetical order):

American University
Duke University
Indiana University
New York University
Oberlin College
Ohio State University
Pennsylvania State University
Princeton University
Stanford University
Tufts University
University of California, Berkeley
University of California, Los Angeles
University of California, Santa Cruz
University of Massachusetts, Maherst
University of Michigan-Ann Arbor
University of Minnesota, Twin Cities
University of Oregon
University of Pennsylvania
Univerity of Puget Sound
University of Southern California

There's a really big LGBT community at Randolph College in Lynchburg, VA, too. It's hard to find strongholds for gay students in Southern America, but this is a wonderful place with a very supportive and strong community. It's a good option for gay men and women who'd like to stay in the South (or go to the South).
